Eco-design as a lever for the recovery of fur waste

Eco-friendly design has allowed BILODEAU Canada to reduce waste and increase profitability. A complete re-examination of how excess fur parts are purposed has allowed for the reuse of several tons of material. Since the 2000s, the company has sought to recycle remnants discarded from production lines. The leftover pieces are viewed as materials with a usage potential, depending on their dimensions and composition. The aim is to keep the amount of waste to a minimum, with optimizing the cutting patterns as the first step, followed by trials in design and conception.

The current initiative involves the reuse of waste resulting from the finishing stages of production. Brushing fur items allows for the removal of free fur (strands detached from the hide). A reconsideration of this waste product has revealed its significant potential for yarn production. In collaboration with other companies, woolen knitting yarn has been produced from black bear, polar bear, musk ox, and coyote. These yarns are then fabricated and marketed. Coyote wool is also repurposed for use in booster soles.
