Fur dressing

Skin dressing, commonly known as tanning, is the first step in fur processing, which is essential for its preservation. BILODEAU Canada has all the necessary equipment to offer the dressing service, whether for the production of products in its workshops, for taxidermy or for customers.

Types of dressing

Wet tanned : This type of dressing consists of leaving the pelt damp to make taxidermy mounts.

Dry tanned : This type of dressing consists in drying the pelt to make products such as boots, mittens, hats and many more.

The fur processing stages

Soaking: Hides are soaked in a basin filled with water and certain chemicals used to dissolve animal fats.

Dewatering: The hides are placed in equipment that will spin the hides at high speed to remove the solution soaked into the hides during the soaking stage.

Brushing: The hides are brushed to remove any loose hair from the leather.

Leather thinning: The hides are thinned to remove as much animal fat as possible, making them more flexible.

Drying the hides: To preserve the hides, they are coated with vegetable fat to nourish the leather. The grease soaks right through to the hair bulb. Excess grease is then removed using cages where the hides are placed with hardwood sawdust. This sawdust is recovered from furniture manufacturers and redistributed to farmers.
