Fur in the Style of Yesteryear

In Québec, most people have heard of Belles histoires des pays d’en haut. Based on the novel The Woman and the Miser (Un homme et son péché) by Claude-Henri Grignon, it was originally adapted to the radio in 1939 and is one of the first Québec radio shows to be aired. Later on, it was brought to the TV screen. This cult series was aired by Radio-Canada TV from 1956 to 1970. An integral part of the cultural heritage of Québec, in 2016, it was brought back to the small screen in a new edition as True North (Les pays d’en haut). It was very successful, airing a total of six seasons.

This story takes place at the end of the nineteenth century. It delves into the daily happenings of a small village founded during the push to colonize the lands further to the north. It offers an intriguing glimpse into the habits and customs of that time. With fur being close at hand, well adapted to cold weather and a highly sought-after commodity, fur trading and its products are ubiquitous in the backdrop of the story.

BILODEAU CANADA is proud to have been part of this new edition of a classic as one of their suppliers, providing period appropriate costumes and accessories as well as furs for various decors. One of the most striking items we made, is the gift Bidou Laloge offers Rosa-Rose; a fox shawl made in the style and techniques of the time, a symbol of luxury and prestige in that era.
